Brisbane swimmer Wayne Thrupp won all three events at the first ever Fiji Pearls Ocean swim last week. Held in Savusavu in Fiji’s northern island of Vanua Levu from May 29 – 31, the event offered three distances: 10k, 5k and 2k, and Thrupp placed first in all of them. .
There was keen competition from other Australian swimmers, who fielded 4 relay teams in the 10k event. And in the 2k event, a total of 25 swimmers took part.
The winner of the women’s 10k event was Jan Taylor, and the 2k event was Denise Elder.
The swim between Daku Resort and Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort runs in a straight line along the coast. It follows the last sweep of Savusavu Bay which is protected from the south easterly trade winds that can sometimes make the sea choppy on the other side of the peninsula. The water is warm and clear. There are coral heads from time to time although they are closer in to the shore line than the swim route.
